Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before getting started.
Getting Started
-
A good rule of thumb: if you have a specific health situation, concern, or decision you need help thinking through, Health Navigation is a great place to start. If you're ready to work on your nutrition, dig into labs, or address a root cause over time, Functional Nutrition Coaching is the path. If you're not sure, book a free 20-minute discovery call and we'll figure it out together.
-
No — it's optional. If you already know what you need, you can book your initial appointment directly. The discovery call is simply there for people who want to talk things through before committing to a session.
-
Yes, and for many clients it makes a lot of sense. You might start with a Health Navigation session to get clarity on a diagnosis, then move into Functional Nutrition Coaching to address the underlying factors through diet and lifestyle. The two services complement each other naturally.
-
No problem at all. Your needs will evolve, and I'm flexible. If you began with Health Navigation and want to shift into ongoing nutrition coaching — or vice versa — we just adjust the focus of our next session and go from there.
-
Availability varies. You can check current openings directly through the booking link. If you don't see a time that works, reach out — I'll do my best to accommodate you.
Health Navigation Sessions
-
No — and that distinction matters. I'm not here to evaluate or challenge your diagnosis or tell you whether your doctor is right or wrong. I'm here to help you process your health situation, understand what it means, explore what options exist, and figure out what to do next. Think of it as having a knowledgeable, trusted guide in your corner — not a second doctor.
-
Common reasons clients come for a navigation session include: a new or confusing diagnosis, a treatment recommendation they want to understand better, feeling dismissed or unheard by their care team, wanting to know what questions to ask before an upcoming appointment, trying to find the right type of specialist, navigating a family member's care, or simply feeling overwhelmed and not knowing where to start.
-
No. My role is to give you the information, context, and support you need to make your own informed decisions — not to direct your medical care. I'll help you understand your options and feel prepared, but the decisions are always yours.
-
Many people find that one well-prepared session gives them exactly what they need. Others come back as new questions arise — a follow-up appointment, a new lab result, a change in their situation. There's no required number of sessions. You book when you need it.
-
Yes — this is one of the most valuable parts of a navigation session for many clients. I can help you identify the right type of specialist or practitioner based on your situation and give you guidance on what to look for, what questions to ask, and how to advocate for yourself once you get there.
Functional Nutrition Sessions
-
Functional nutrition takes a root-cause approach — instead of focusing only on managing symptoms, we look at why those symptoms are happening in the first place. That means considering your full health picture: your diet, lifestyle, labs, gut health, hormones, stress, and more. It's more investigative and personalized than a standard dietary consult, and it takes into account factors that conventional nutrition advice often doesn't address.
-
Not at all. Many clients come to me with a clear diagnosis they want to address through nutrition. Others come with symptoms they can't get answers for, or simply want to feel better and optimize their health. You don't need a diagnosis to benefit from personalized nutrition support.
-
No. You can start with an initial intake session and see how it feels. That said, most clients find that real, lasting change happens with follow-up support — your body takes time to respond to nutrition changes, and having someone to adjust your plan along the way makes a big difference. We'll talk about what makes sense for your situation after your first session. Packages of multiple sessions are available at discounted rates.
-
I make evidence-based supplement recommendations as part of a personalized protocol when appropriate — but I don't prescribe medications. Supplement recommendations are always based on your specific health picture, not a one-size-fits-all approach. They are practitioner grade quality and available at a discounted price.
-
Testing is always optional and based on your goals and what would be most informative for your situation. Tests I commonly work with include comprehensive stool analysis (gut health), DUTCH hormone testing, micronutrient panels, organic acids, adrenal/cortisol saliva testing, mycotoxin/mold urine testing, and food sensitivity testing, among others. I order, interpret, and build your plan around the results.
-
Absolutely — and I encourage it. I work alongside your existing care team, not instead of them. Many clients find that nutrition and lifestyle support fills important gaps in their overall care. I'm happy to coordinate with your providers if that's helpful.
Insurance & Payment
-
While I do not bill insurance directly, I am happy to provide a superbill after our sessions that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement.
Because coverage varies significantly between plans, I recommend calling your insurance provider before we begin to ask about your out-of-network benefits. Specifically, inquire whether they cover out-of-network nutritional counseling under:
CPT Code S9470 (Nutritional Counseling)
ICD Code Z71.3 (Dietary Counseling and Surveillance)
Navigating reimbursement and following up on claims is the client's responsibility, and I am unable to contact insurance companies on your behalf regarding rejected claims. If your insurance requires alternative billing or diagnosis codes for coverage, please let me know. I am glad to accommodate specific code requests on future superbills as long as they are truthful and accurately describe the care provided.
-
Yes — HSA and FSA cards are accepted for all services, including Health Navigation. If you're using insurance, HSA/FSA can also cover any remaining out-of-pocket costs like copays or coinsurance.
-
Payment is due at the time of your session. Your card on file can be automatically charge or we can arrange another form of biling.
Appointments & Logistics
-
All appointments are held virtually via secure, HIPAA-compliant video call. You'll receive a link before your session — no special software or downloads required. All you need is a device with a camera and a reasonably quiet space.
-
I am licensed as a Dietitian Nutritionist in Florida and Illinois. I am also a Certified Nutrition Specialist which allows me to see clients virtually throughout the United States, though the scope of nutrition services may vary by state. If you have questions about your specific state, feel free to reach out.
-
Please cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours before your appointment. Late cancellations or no-shows may be subject to a fee. Life happens — if something comes up, just reach out as soon as you can and we'll work it out.
-
Please send a message as soon as you know. I'll hold the session for up to 15 minutes. If you're significantly late, we may need to shorten or reschedule the session depending on availability.
-
You'll receive instructions for securely uploading documents after you book. Please send anything relevant at least 24 hours before your session so I have time to review it beforehand.
What I Can and Can’t Do
-
No. I am a Registered Nurse and Certified Nutrition Specialist. I do not diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, or provide medical treatment. My services are nutritional, educational, and advisory in nature, and are always intended to complement — not replace — your relationship with your medical providers
-
No — diagnosing is outside my scope of practice. What I can do is help you understand a diagnosis you've already received, explain what it may mean from a nutrition and lifestyle perspective, and help you figure out your next steps. I'm here to help you navigate, not to provide a medical opinion.
-
No. Prescribing and adjusting medications is outside my scope of practice. If you have questions about a medication, I can help you understand what questions to bring to your prescribing provider — but any medication changes need to go through your doctor.
-
Yes. All sessions are conducted on a HIPAA-compliant platform and your health information is handled with full confidentiality and professionalism. I do not share your information with third parties without your consent.
-
In many cases, yes — and these are often the clients who benefit most from having an informed, knowledgeable guide in their corner. However, I always work within my scope of practice. If your needs require medical management beyond what I'm able to provide, I'll be upfront about that and help you find the right support.
